Bloomer meaning, and the other spellings

A bloomer is full-coverage innerwear with a short leg. It sits at or just below the waist, covers the seat completely, and the leg continues down the upper thigh instead of stopping at the leg crease.

The same garment is sold and searched for under a lot of names: bloomer panty, panty bloomer, bloomers panty, bloomer underwear for women, ladies bloomer. You will also see it spelled blomer, blumer or bloomer panti — all the same thing, and shopkeepers will know exactly what you mean whichever you say. It is pronounced BLOO-mer.

Are bloomers underwear? Yes. In India today the word means innerwear, worn under clothes. In British usage it has sometimes described loose outerwear shorts, and older British sources use "knickers" for underwear generally — which is why a search can turn up both meanings. On this site, and in the Indian market, a bloomer is a cotton panty with a leg.

In Hindi and Tamil

There is no separate word in either language — the garment is called a bloomer, usually typed in English letters even by people searching in Hindi or Tamil.

If someone asks bloomer kya hota hai, the plain answer is: ब्लूमर एक सूती अंडरवियर है, जिसकी टाँग सामान्य पैंटी से लंबी होती है और जो जांघ के ऊपरी हिस्से को ढकती है। In Roman script: bloomer ek cotton underwear hai, jiski leg normal panty se lambi hoti hai aur jo thigh ke upper part ko cover karti hai.

In Tamil: ப்ளூமர் என்பது நீளமான காலுடன் கூடிய பருத்தி உள்ளாடை. இது இடுப்பையும் தொடையின் மேற்பகுதியையும் மறைக்கிறது. — a cotton innerwear with a longer leg, covering the hip and upper thigh.

Where the word comes from

The name comes from Amelia Bloomer, an American writer and campaigner who in the 1850s promoted a style of dress that replaced heavy floor-length skirts with a shorter skirt over loose gathered trousers. She did not design the garment, but she published and defended it, and the press attached her name to it.

Those original bloomers were outerwear — full trousers gathered at the ankle. Over the following century the shape shortened, moved under the clothes, and became what it is now: a cotton undergarment with a short leg, worn by women and girls across India. The name survived a century and two changes of meaning, which is why a dictionary and a shopkeeper will tell you different things.

Bloomer, brief, hipster, boyshort

"Panty" is the broad everyday term. Briefs, hipsters and boyshorts are specific cuts within it; the bloomer is the easiest to identify because it has the extended leg.

Bloomer and boyshort overlap the most, and that is where the naming confusion sits. A boyshort is cut close to the hip with a short, mostly horizontal leg line; a bloomer usually has slightly more room and slightly more length. Who wears bloomers, and why

• Women who walk or stand all day. The longer leg keeps skin off skin. This is the single most common reason customers switch and stay.
• Anyone in skirts, dresses, kurtis or nighties. A short panty rides up under loose fabric; a bloomer does not.
• School and college students. Coverage that stays put through sitting cross-legged, sports and the trip home.
• Children. The same shape is made from size 45 up, which is why one style covers a two-year-old and an adult.

The one situation where a shorter panty wins is under tight, thin fabric, where a bloomer leg can show as a faint horizontal line.

Sizes 45 to 100

Bloomers here are numbered rather than sized S, M and L, and the number is the waist measurement in centimetres. Size 85 means an 85 cm waist, about 33.5 inches. Measure the natural waist, round up to the next number ending in 0 or 5, and take the larger size if you are between two — a waistband forced to stretch to fit rolls down and loses its elastic first.

Colours

Black is the everyday default: it disappears under dark trousers, skirts and jeans, hides wear, and needs no special washing. A light shade is for the one job black cannot do — wearing under white, cream or pale clothing, where anything dark reads as a visible patch. Blue, navy and the mid-tones sit between the two and work under most things.

In 100% cotton, no. They cover more skin but prevent the thigh rubbing that actually causes discomfort in heat. Fabric matters more than coverage.
